Public Relations’ Grand Illusion
“Public Relations is really all about communications
tactics and publicity.” Sorry, no. Whether you are a
business, non-profit, government agency or
association manager, PR actually is all about a high-
impact action plan which does something meaningful
about the behaviors of those important audiences that
most affect your organization; creates the kind of
external stakeholder behavior change that leads directly
to achieving your managerial objectives; and does so
by persuading those key outside folks to your way of
thinking by helping move them to take actions that
allow your department, group, division or subsidiary
to succeed.
Communications tactics are nice, and really necessary
when you need to move a message from here to there.
But that’s all they are.
The PR illusion that simple tactics like press releases,
broadcast plugs, special events or brochures can
deliver the end-products outlined in the first paragraph
all by themselves, is not merely misguided, it’s wishful
thinking.
Worse, it can become a dangerous tactical preoccupation
with many managers, diverting their attention from the
PR end-product he or she has a right to expect.
Unfortunately, it also denies that manager the best that
public relations has to offer.
Of course, all options are open when our manager bases
his or her public relations planning on its underlying
premise: People act on their own perception of the facts
before them, which leads to predictable behaviors about
which something can be done. When we create, change
or reinforce that opinion by reaching, persuading and
moving-to-desired-action the very people whose
behaviors affect the organization the most, the public
relations mission is usually accomplished.
At the core of PR’s premise is the fact that good public
relations planning really CAN alter individual
perception and result in changed behaviors among
key outside audiences. But you’ll only get there when
your PR demands more than news releases, special
events and broadcast plugs. Only then will you receive
the quality public relations results you deserve.
What kind of PR end-products can you expect? Here
are several: politicians and legislators begin looking
at you as a key member of the business, non-profit
or association communities; new prospects actually
start to do business with you; capital givers or
specifying sources begin to look your way; welcome
bounces in show room visits occur; community leaders
begin to seek you out; new proposals for strategic
alliances and joint ventures start showing up;
customers begin to make repeat purchases; and
membership applications start to rise.
I’d suggest that you look first to your public relations
professionals for your new opinion monitoring project
since they’re already in the perception and behavior
business. But be certain that the PR staff really accepts
why it’s SO important to know how your most
important outside audiences perceive your operations,
products or services. Essentially, be sure they believe
that perceptions almost always result in behaviors that
can help or hurt your operation.
Take the time needed to go over your plans for
monitoring and gathering perceptions by questioning
members of your most important outside audiences.
Ask questions like these: how much do you know
about our organization? Have you had prior contact
with us and were you pleased with the interchange?
Are you familiar with our services or products and
employees? Have you experienced problems with
our people or procedures?
The fact, however, is this. When you use professional
survey firms to do the opinion gathering work, your
costs can exceed the expense of using those PR folks
of yours in that monitoring capacity. But whether it’s
your people or a survey firm asking the questions, the
objective remains the same: identify untruths, false
assumptions, unfounded rumors, inaccuracies,
misconceptions and any other negative perception
that might translate into hurtful behaviors.
Setting a clearcut and realistic PR goal now comes
front and center. As with most strategic programs,
it must call for action on the most serious problem
areas you uncovered during your key audience
perception monitoring. Possibly, you will decide to
stop that potentially painful rumor cold. Or
straighten out that dangerous misconception?
Or correct that gross inaccuracy?
Equally key, you must link your goal to an equally
action-oriented strategy that shows how to get to
where you’re going. Actually, you have just three
strategic options available to you when it comes
to doing something about perception and opinion.
Change existing perception, create perception
where there may be none, or reinforce it. Needless
to say, the wrong strategy pick will taste like some
brands of vegetarian meatballs. So be sure your
new strategy fits well with your new public relations
goal. You certainly don’t want to select “change”
when the facts dictate a strategy of reinforcement.
Because good writing is central to the public
relations business, the best writer on your team must
prepare a persuasive message that will help move
your key audience to your way of thinking. It has
to be a carefully-written message targeted directly
at your key external audience. Your writer must
come up with really corrective language that is
not merely compelling, persuasive and believable,
but clear and factual if they are to shift
perception/opinion towards your point of view
and lead to the behaviors you have in mind.
Here’s a lighter topic. Selecting the communications
tactics most likely to carry your message to the
attention of your target audience. There are many
available. From speeches, facility tours, emails
and brochures to consumer briefings, media
interviews, newsletters, personal meetings and
many others. But be certain that the tactics you
pick are known to reach folks just like your
audience members.
Of course how you communicate must concern
you at this point. The reason is that the credibility
of any message is fragile and always suspect.
Which is why the means by which you
communicate is always be a concern. And that’s
also why you may wish to unveil your corrective
message before smaller meetings through
presentations rather than using higher-profile news
releases.
To establish comparative progress, you may wish to
demonstrate how the monies spent on public relations
can pay off in the form of periodic progress reports.
But, it’s also an alert to begin a second perception
monitoring session with members of your external
audience. You’ll want to use many of the same
questions used in the benchmark session. But now,
you will be on strict alert for signs that the bad news
perception is being altered in your direction.
Any program can suffer from occasional slowdowns
in momentum. Your options include speeding
things up by adding more communications tactics
and/or increasing their frequencies.
Clearly, it is no illusion when managers move
beyond communication tactics, and create a high-impact,
PR action plan certain to deliver to them the very best
public relations has to offer.

The good news is that advertising works. I’ve witnessed real, measurable results making me a big believer in advertising. The bad news is that it’s the most expensive way to grow your business - you are literally buying new customers. Don’t get me wrong, adding new clients to your customer base is critical to the success of your business and advertising is the means to do that.
While so much attention is focused on growing your customer list, what is often overlooked is that your current customer base is your best source for additional revenue. It’s most likely to be the most valuable asset of your business and unfortunately every year a percentage of that customer base stops doing business with you. What you need to do is limit that loss because the longer you hold on to a customer, the more money you make.
Consider this:
1. It costs six times less to retain an existing customer than to acquire a new one.
2. Your customers know your business and are comfortable doing business with you. You’re the incumbent supplier, a known quantity and inertia usually prevents them from switching. Most likely, they are less price sensitive (and picky) than new customers and prospects.
3. Loyal customers usually place bigger orders because they trust you.
4. Loyal customers give you referrals.
So, what’s the secret to keeping your customers and how do you prevent them from defecting?
You have to give them exactly what they want. And how do you find that out? You ask them.
That sounds so simple, but when was the last time you picked up the phone, called a customer and said “Hey Bob, how are we doing?” Think about it, an objective, marketing-minded customer survey for your company could pay huge dividends. Here’s what you need to find out:
1. What are your customers’ perceptions of your company?
2. What can you change to improve the overall customer experience?
3. What kinds of products or services they are looking for?
4. What is the likelihood that your current customers will purchase from you again?
5. How are you viewed in relation to your competitors?
6. Are you making decisions based on your most vocal customers or your entire customer base?
Use the data from your customer survey to help you understand how your relationship is currently perceived by your customers and what actions you may need to take to improve the relationship - and to enhance customer satisfaction, loyalty, and desired business outcomes with all customers.

Obesity is one of the greatest health concerns facing dogs. You can and should do something about it. Overweight dogs may live shorter and less healthy lives and your enjoyment of their unconditional love and companionship may be shortened because of it.
Extra pounds place an excess burden on bones and joints and can make arthritis problems worse. Overweight dogs are less able to exercise and play comfortably and their breathing may be labored. Their bodies may be less able to resist infections, and they may be at greater risk for problems during surgery and anesthesia.
Potential health problems include:
How Dogs Become Overweight?
Dogs most always become overweight from lack of good exercise and from eating more food than they require. Food calories, which aren’t burned during their daily activities, are stored as fat.
Overeating can result from greediness, boredom, or overfeeding. Feeding leftovers or giving frequent snacks or treats often contributes to excess weight problems.
Over-fed puppies tend to become overweight dogs. They also have a greater risk of developing orthopedic problems. Properly feed puppies will be less likely to suffer from weight problems later in life.
Occasionally, metabolic disorders can cause a dog to become overweight. But overfeeding and under exercising are much more common causes of excess weight. If your veterinarian suspects that a metabolic disorder is causing your dog to gain weight, he or she will test for that disorder and treat it accordingly.
How Can I Tell if My Dog is Overweight?
A quick check to determine whether your dog is overweight is to feel his ribs with the flat palm of your hand. If you have difficulty feeling his ribs, then your dog probably needs to lose weight.
Helping Your Dog Lose Weight.
Weight loss for most dogs involves increased exercise and eating food with fewer calories. It’s generally easier to feed normal amounts of a low-calorie dog food than to feed much smaller amounts of his/her regular dog food. In addition, your dog will not feel as hungry when fed a normal amount of food
Dieting for Dogs.
Your vet will help set a weight goal for your dog and will recommend how much food he should eat each day. A special diet may also be prescribed. The food choice should be designed to satisfy your dog’s appetite and provide him all the vitamins and minerals he needs while at the same time helping him to lose weight.
Your dog may need a gradual transition from the old to the new diet. So, you would feed him increasing amounts of the new diet while decreasing the amounts of the previous diet each day over several days until the transition is complete.
To help keep your dog from begging, feed him before your family eats, and keep him out of the room during your meal. It is also a good idea to feed overweight dogs at the same time as other pets to help prevent food stealing from their slimmer companions. Always provide plenty of clean, fresh drinking water.
Regular exercise, such as walks or runs, is good for most dogs because it increases the number of calories they burn. If your dog is old or in poor health, check with your vet before increasing exercise.
The time period your dog will require to lose weight depends upon how much weight he is required to lose. Your dog may need 8 to 14 weeks or longer to reach his target weight.
What Type of Dog Food is Good for Weight Control?
A dieting dog has special nutritional needs. His diet should be balanced with a proper ratio of protein, fat and carbohydrates. The diet should also provide a normal volume of food to satisfy his hunger and the food should also provide quality nutrients.
Weight loss plans don’t need to include high levels of fiber. Fiber is not necessary for weight loss in pets, and in large amounts, it may have side effects such as increased feces and lack of interest in the food because of its poor taste.

Anyone who is a leader or member of a group and wants to get things accomplished knows that there are many issues and challenges that groups commonly face as they seek to find creative solutions, launch new initiatives, and create high performing teams.
The Book Leading Groups to Solutions addresses how team leaders and team members can collaborate, problem solve, plan, organize, and make decisions by exploring models and tools that enable facilitators to help groups achieve their goals.
This book is not about meeting management, nor is it about how to present or speak in front of a group. It is not about how to train or teach people, though this can be part of the process.
This book is about the collaborative process of building consensus, creating synergy, and harnessing collective energy to create innovative solutions. The practical ideas guide group facilitation through combining the best individual thinking into one focused effort and creating shared commitment so that the implementation of solutions is supported and sustained long term.
With 55 combined years of experience, in research and client work, we’ve observed group facilitation and behaviors in many situations and have learned a few things about what makes an effective team. We also put our own facilitation skills and process to the test as we discussed, debated, and argued the merits of various approaches and theories. Even the writing and editing of the book required that we “walk our own talk” as we resolved differences, defined priorities, and created a coherent message.
We believe that the principles and suggestions in this book will help everyone who spends time in teams. Whether leading, participating as a team member, or both, you will find that this book provides a practical framework for facilitating effective teams.
“A solution is the result of many ideas coming together.”

I’m sure most women have heard the saying, ‘ You can never be too rich, or too thin’. I won’t comment on whether or not you can be too rich, but I do have some words on the too thin part of the statement.
‘Ana-Mia’, refers to Anorexia, and Bulimia, two of the most widespread eating disorders affecting our society. We constantly hear about teenage girls succumbing to these disorders. Our girls grow toward maturity, and find their bodies changing, developing toward womanhood, and there everywhere, are the images of ad models, female celebrities, with bodies starved, with waist, hips, legs, bearing a resemblance to those of a child. Our girls are being taught they should strive to retain, at all costs, their ‘little girl’ bodies. They are being infused with fear, at an early age, of not fitting in, not looking like the model of acceptable feminine beauty, set forth by a sick society.
What we do not hear about is the problem of more mature women, falling victim. As usual, the mature segment of our society has been overlooked, as far as research concerning yet another health issue for women. Yet, from my own personal research, I’ve discovered it is definitely a serious problem.
At a time in life, when it is so important for women to maintain a healthy diet, many mature women choose to follow rigid weight-loss plans, bordering on self-starvation. Often they adopt strenuous exercise regimens as well, in an attempt to either lose weight, or keep it off, or to achieve an unrealistic ‘perfection’, as to their body. A hoped for return to the body they possessed, ten, twenty, thirty, years ago.
There is no one cause associated with developing an eating disorder. Psychological factors are often mentioned as triggers, such as a dysfunctional family or relationship, or individual personality traits, such as a penchant for perfection. Emotional negativity, traumas such as rape, abuse, or the death of a loved one can result in triggering these disorders. Most women with eating disorders suffer from these three basic factors- low self-esteem, a feeling of helplessness, and extreme dissatisfaction with the way they look.
Society
Present-day society may be to blame for more than a few cases of eating disorders. This fashion and image obsessed culture bears no resemblance to reality. We are persistently brainwashed by the visual media. Daily we are bombarded by enhanced images of what are touted as ‘perfect women’. These women are too often alarmingly underweight, even to the point of emaciation. ‘Thin’ is perceived as the only possible acceptable look. Grown women, starved, often to the point of resembling pre-pubescent girls, and then cosmetically enhanced, sporting breast implants, butt implants, etc., these women are presented as the symbols of ‘perfection’ to the masses. So ingrained in our society has this image become, it now negatively affects every aspect of our lives, even permeating our workplaces. No matter how unrealistic it is to believe the average female can, or for that matter, would want to abuse her body in the manner mentioned above, society seems to have come to the point of no return, on this issue.
Thin Equals ‘Looking Young’
For mature women, society’s knife of influence is double-edged. Not only are we being told women must have a certain perfect body type, we are also being told that being overly thin equals looking young. ‘Lose weight, look younger!’ we see ads for diet aids promoted thus, everywhere. In such an atmosphere, even emotionally well balanced, intelligent women may be won over to the dark side!

Choosing the best home treadmill can be confusing as you sift through all of the options, new models, and brand name ‘deals’. Too often, people get caught up in all the ‘Goodies’ a treadmill offers them that they miss the fact that the treadmill doesn’t have the basic essentials of a quality unit.
By knowing the 4 basic essentials of a quality home treadmill, you’ll be able to quickly sift through the treadmill deals and choose the best home treadmill for you.
The 4 basic essentials to a quality treadmill are:
#1 - High Powered, Well Built Motor
Since the motor is the most expensive part of the treadmill to fix, a good motor is essential to your treadmill. Try to find at least a motor power of 2.0 HP, preferably higher.
Remember that a 1.5 HP motor has to work twice as hard as a 3.0 HP motor - so it will burn out long before the 3.0 HP motor.
Also, not all motors are built with the same quality parts. Look for a good brand name and a long motor warranty to give you clues as to the quality of the motor.
#2 - Excellent Cushioning
There’s not enough said about cushioning and it is so important in a home treadmill. A good cushioning system protects your joints, ligaments and back. A poor cushioning system can result in injury and pain.
I know of one woman who bought a cheaper brand of treadmill and then ran on it. Within 6 months, she had damaged her hips so badly that it hurt her to even walk on the treadmill. You definitely don’t want that!
Make sure your treadmill offers an excellent cushioning system - especially if you’ll be running!
#3 - Extensive Warranty
You want to protect your investment so a solid treadmill warranty is a must. A good treadmill warranty will cover the frame for at least 30 years, the motor for at least 5 years and other parts and labor for about 1 year. Anything above that and you’ve got an excellent warranty.
But a warranty isn’t just to protect your investment - a good warranty lets you know about the quality of the treadmill parts.
Treadmill companies do not include warranties because they think they’ll have to fix the treadmill within that time frame. They know that they WON’T have to fix them within that time frame because the quality of parts used are high. So if you find a treadmill with a 10 year motor warranty, you KNOW it’s a quality built motor. If the motor warranty is only 90 days however…that tells you something.
#4 - Quality Brand Name
Certain brand names have a reputation for building a high quality home treadmill. Other brand names may be well-known but they don’t necessarily have a good reputation.
Choose a treadmill that has a solid, trusted brand name. Not sure which brands are good? Check out expert ratings and ‘Best Buys’ on various treadmill review sites and/or magazines. You’ll start to see a trend where certain brand names come up frequently. These brands are the quality treadmill manufacturers.
So those are 4 basic essentials of a good home treadmill:
- High Powered, Well Built Motor
- Excellent Cushioning
- Extensive Warranty
- Quality Brand Name
Knowing these, you can sift through the treadmills available and easily locate the best treadmill for your home.

An integral part of any quality CRM system is lead tracking software. This is the part of the system that helps you gather customer data from your sales force. The ideal lead tracking software package, however, won’t just tell you where the sales are coming from, but will help generate revenue by pointing sales representative to higher conversion segments of your customer base.
Lead tracking software varies in features and capabilities, but most companies require a software package versatile enough to track both in-bound and out-bound sales information while taking into account numerous lead sources. If your current lead tracking software is unable to track lead information from a majority of the following sources, chances are you’re going to be left behind by your competition:
Word of mouth leads
Search engine/website leads
Email leads
Pay-per-click leads
Phone leads
Direct mail leads
Trade show leads
Advertising leads
Face-to-face sales leads
Today’s companies need to be prepared to excel on multiple sales fronts by knowing their customers. Your lead tracking software should not only be able to collect important demographic data from the customer “touch points” listed above, but it should also be able to make sense of the data. Simply compiling terabytes of customer data is not going to necessarily boost revenue. The ability to separate and utilize useful customer info is what separates the key players from the guys that’ll shortly be looking for new work.
While the responsibility to give meaning to customer information lies primarily with management, quality lead tracking software can assist any businessman in slicing and dicing what could otherwise be incomprehensible mounds of data. The problem with most software packages however, is that they either only do one thing well, i.e. track website clicks/traffic, or they do many things with mediocrity. You can spend a bunch of money on half a dozen specialized programs, or settle for an all-in-one program that doesn’t do any one thing really well.
While most companies are willing to invest quite a bit of money into lead tracking software, the problem with the first option is that while each program is great at what its supposed to do, none of the separate programs mesh together well, if at all. That creates a communication problem for large, complex companies with separate sales, marketing, and customer care departments.
The good news is that lead tracking software that combines the quality of focused applications with the versatility of the all-in-one packages are becoming available at prices that even the budgets of smaller companies can handle.
