Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) was launched in the mid-seventies and orginally the company’s specialization was in ‘bootstrap’ buyouts. But aiming to make their acquisitions greener, they have launched a unique project that has totally transformed the method by which business concerns and environmental activists work forever.

KKR’s Henry Kravis and the non-profit environmental advocacy group Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) merged last year, with the mission of making environmentally sound business practices a commonplace concept. Their company mission is to offer encouragement to their affiliated enterprises to avoid environmental menaces e.g. toxic chemical use not to forget any unrestrained consumption of water resources.

Eco-efficiency (the term was first propagated by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development) is the technique leveraged to achieve these objectives, through employing environmentally sound policies such as fuel economy, increasing the durability of products and recycling programs. The program was initially well received, but the management did not even understand the full advantages of the project until Ken Mehlman, the person in charge of the project, studied the program subsequent to its first year in operation.

Much to everyone’s surprise, Ken saw that the program not only helped in preserving the local environment, but was also increasing the profits from all their business concerns too. Currently, KKR and Ken Mehlman have managed to get almost every associated organization actively participating in the program. Still, with a current portfolio estimated at 86 billion dollars, you may be sure this was no easy see what an enormous achievement this is. KKR with the EDF along with Ken Mehlman have also developed the initial program. The Climate Corps Program administrated by the Environmental Defense Fund is an example of this, it promotes eco-efficient principles to students taking an MBA.

Moreover, Ken Mehlman has been collaborating closely with KKR to create a series of systems which a wide variety of business organizations can employ to measure different resources. Programs such as these can measure a company’s progress and identify any areas which might need improving.

Today’s business community has been transformed forever by the ecologically focused efforts of Henry Kravis, the KKC, and the Environmental Defense Fund. In summary, the work of these organizations has made green business techniques not only viable, but commercially desirable, and their revolutionary ideas are setting a new standard in the business world of today.
